Steve Woods 'Pro Supercharged' 48' Anglia on one of his typical burnouts!  Steve on a 6.79 - 203.84 mph run.  Me and Steve go back to the 1960's and early 70's at Fremont Raceway when we raced there, many a Saturday night.  The Anglia you see above is the same one he had back then...a four door...slightly modified!

In the late 1960's, Fremont Raceway responded to the fans requests for exhibition racing.  They paid good money for the damndest machines you ever saw to make exhibition runs.  Everything from Rocket cars to Turbinque gocarts.  One Saturday night, 'Woody' showed up at Fremont with his Chrysler powered 48' Anglia, the one above,  without a wing.  Only this time, he was running 50% nitro in the tank!  Ol Steve wasn't going to let some 350 mph rocket car out do him!  Well...the announcer gave him the big buildup, and Steve fired the motor, and it sounded bad...as bad as the baddest funny car I had heard up to then.  He layed down a burnout with more smoke than the picture above...really!  Only at the top of the burnout, he launched the blower right out of the car with boom that could have been heard in Oakland.  After he got the car into the pits and loaded up, he came by and we talked.  I said, "...I'll build a blower for you if you have another one.  He said, "...Yeah, I do...and OK."  I built one for him, and two weeks later, and another Saturday night...there was Steve firing in the buildup area, and everyone at the strip hanging onto the fence watching.  As usual, it sounded bad!  He put down another super smoker, and launched the blower I built him into orbit with another sonic boom.  Later, I think Steve figured out he was just a tad lean!

I've known 'Woody' for a long time...his driving style and skill has always impressed me.  He only knows one way...his foot to the firewall with no fear!  Still a friend.

Steve Woods.  Back in 1964, he started showing up out at Fremont Raceway with his rough looking old 48' Anglia 4 door...the one you see in the background.  Some of the racer's at Fremont didn't really take Steve that serious.  He was tall, skinny, and didn't look the part of a racer at all!  Some even looked down on him, even though, if you were broke down, and needed a part (even today), Steve would give it to you if he had it, even if he had to race against you.  It didn't take long for them to start gaining a LOT of respect for this man though; because he STILL might not look the part, but folks...I'm here to tell you, that behind that innocent looking face, is a ferocious, fearless competitor, and a great drag racer.  If you don't believe me...just line up along side of him some time...LOL!

Mallicoat Bros. chassis...another Tom Chambliss masterpiece!  You can see how the AA/GS cars chassis' have evolved over the years into complex, intricate structures.  Even more amazing, is that this chassis bare, weighs no more than 190 lbs.

Some of the 'Guy's' with the Mallicoat car.  LR; Jerry Mallicoat; Dale Boomgaarden; Gary Mallicoat; and Mike Steinberg.

Even though these guy's are all old time racer's, their still setting the world on fire.  Mallicoat's car, with Dale driving, set top qualifying speed of 204.44 mph at the Bakersfield 'Good Guy's' meet in March of 2002.  To date, the cars best times  are 6.76 e.t. 204.98 mph, recorded at Sacramento April 27-28th of 2002.  Better things to come are on the horizon, as they  improve with every new race.  They are fast becoming a real force in the 'Pro Supercharged' class.

Dale's also an old Fremont racer from the sixties and seventy's.  He had a purple street roadster called 'Evil Doer,' he drove back then in the gas class in those days.  The car ran frequently at Fremont...I remember it...Dale has learned well!

The 'Pro Supercharged' class in the 'Good Guy's' circuit is at a world class level folks.  The guy's you are seeing and reading about here in this web site represent the major leagues of this class.  All of these people have honed their skills for years...people like Steve Woods, Mallicoat Bros., Dale Boomgaarden, Ron Nunes, Gary Reinero, Howard Anderson, Tom Chambliss, etc.  They all come from an era of old racer's that were out at the drag strip almost every week-end, racing their home-made cars...trying new things...and putting their lives on the line doing it...some even died.  What drag racing is today, is a direct result of all their's, and many others like them's contribution to this sport.  In order to run against them, you have to be running on the record... every run!

Here's another shot of the Mallicoat 'Guy's.'  LR; Jerry Mallicoat; Skip Hess; Gary Mallicoat; and Mike Steinberg.  Some of you will remember Skip Hess (Shores & Hess) from the early days of the gasser war's.  Skip had a 48' Anglia with a blown and injected big block Chevy engine that ran well in AA/GSupercharged.  He also built a Mustang in the early 1970's, that was powered with a blown and injected SOHC Ford cammer engine, that also ran in AA/GSupercharged, and was sponsored by 'Revell.'  Skip and the Mallicoat brothers, have been doing this for a long time. (No, those aren't Skip's real eyes!...LOL)

Ron Nunes.  He's been racing blown gas coupes from the early 1960's, and as always, he's still right on top of his game.  He is another old time Fremont racer from the 1960's and 70's, who held the NHRA BB/Gas Supercharged record at one time.  Ronnie ranks right up there, as probably one of the best to ever come out of Northern California.  Then, as now, he's always marched to his own drum beat.  A very heady guy, and a great competitior and drag racer.  Ron has done very well in business life as well.

Gary Reinero is proving he can still do it!  His beautiful 48' Austin 'Pro Supercharged' (AA/GS) car is one of the top running cars in the world!  Me and 'Fuzzy' go back all the way to the 1960's at Fremont Drag strip.  Gary ran a late model 426 Dodge hemi. engine in an all steel 48' Austin in the A/Gas ranks, and he was bad!  He bought a blown & injected 426 hemi. engine that I built, from me, out of my 'Lemon Twist' Austin.  He still runs the motor in a boat out at 'Yosemite Lake' after almost 30 years, and he says it can still kick butt!

Here is a picture of the Anderson Bros. 'Pro Supercharged' (AA/GS) 38' Chevy.  This beauty features a BAE 420 ci. motor, Carbon fibre body, URE (Dave Uyehara) chasiss, B&J 4 speed transmission, and a Crower clutch.  They currently run the AA/GS circuit, and the 'Good Guys' events.  Their best times are: 6.88 e.t. - 202.24 mph. with Howard Anderson driving.

The brothers ran a 48' Anglia B/Gasser with a small block Chevy in it back in the middle to late sixties.  Old guys can still drive, can't they?

Anderson Bros. Chevy bodied replica.  The first of the old style bodied cars to run over 200 mph without a wing.  Davy Uryehara URC built the chassis using Tom Chambliss's CRC chassis concept, and critical component measurement  locations. URC also mounted the body, designed and installed the aluminum interior, and all other items and details necessary to complete this car.  Tom Chambliss won the "Best Engineering" award from the 'Good Guy's' racing association at the 2001 Bakersfield reunion meet.  It's a gem!

As Always!...more pictures of the guys to follow.
